9. DNA Extraction

An organism is a living being that can sustain its own life and is able to grow, develop, and respond to its environment. All organisms contain some type of genetic material. To extract DNA, we use detergent to poke holes in the cell membranes and nuclear envelopes protecting the cell’s genetic material. Once all of the contents spill out, we have a mixture of DNA and organelles, we then use ions in salts to bind to DNA and make it less negative and therefore less polar so that we could precipitate it out of solution. The purpose is to get the kids familiar with genetic material and lay the foundation for future workshops.
